The way death is handled in Brokenblades is different of what
you can be used to. Hey, isn't what you expect by playing
here anyways.
Death in Brokenblades is not permanent but rather interpreted
like you are out of action. In BBU when you reach 0 hit points
you are "falling" rather than dying.
It may sound easier than going to the Fugue plane/ heaven/
hell/ afterlife and that's somewhat true since you don't have
to prostitute yourself to get back on the material plane.
However, this system also contains new forms of undiscovered
pain... it impairs all your fellowship, cripples your character
for a period of time, and it costs experience.
Falling:
A lil like the warhammer fantasy system.
At this moment, your character had his share of physical
abuse and fall on the ground. Then the brokenblade's critical
wounds sys checks with your constitution if you are not seriously
injured. There is 26 traumas available for you convenience.
It can be few broken bones or more nasty bruises involving
your beloved internal organs.
Anyhow, you will hear you character whine if a critical wound
is scored. Seriously wounded or not you are out of action
for 30 seconds. The screen will go black slowly as your character
loses the consciousness. You will be able to get back on your
feet after that period of time.
Getting up after being pummelled is not a great experience.
Your character well aware of his recent failure is losing
self confidence. Some panic can be felt amongst the group
as well. To represent this, your character will lose 10% of
experience points and the entire group will surfer of a -1%
to their edge score; the group's chances to find the object
of their quest. In addition to this your death is recorded
in you personal stats decreasing various scores related to
reliability .
At lower levels death/"falling" is not too costly.
Expect to fall in combat a couple of time. But later on when
you are mid advanced characters, falling in combat cost a
lot. More you are experienced, less the module/life forgives.
In a world carved by the blade like this one, where your
life is something less valuable than a few gold pieces or
a meal, you really have to know what you are doing when you
reach for your weapon.
